Even in the 21st century, society can be terribly judgemental towards a different sexual orientation. 2017 saw a lot of celebrities speaking out about being gay or bisexual, thus helping give voice to the millions out there looking for support. 10. Aaron Carter
Better known as the kid brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, Aaron’s stint in Hollywood has followed a truly rocky path that has seen him stumble from chart success to rehab stints. In August last year, he came out to fans revealing that he felt attracted to both, boys and girls. In a heartfelt declaration on his Twitter channel Carter said that he was never ashamed to be a bisexual; however, it was “a burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off me.”
09. Anthony Bowens
This American heartthrob shows some heavy muscle in the ring and in matters of the heart too. Coming out in March last year, Bowens opened up about his bisexuality and addressing in depth the discrimination he personally faced due to his sexual orientation. Stating that he was fed up with the stigma endured by members of the LGBTQ community and the pressures of having to fit in with society, Bowens urged people to stay true to themselves. He proudly said “I couldn’t help but cry as I let loose all of the years of stress, anxiety and fear of judgment. It was the best decision I had ever made.”
08. Shannon Purser
The star of the highly acclaimed television series Stranger Things, Shannon Purser is the newest member of the ever-growing community of celebrities who admit to being bisexual. Opening up on Twitter, Purser admitted that she only recently came out as a bisexual to her family and friends as she had battled anxiety about her sexual orientation for years. The Netflix star went on about her sexual orientation saying that “It’s something I am still processing and trying to understand and I don’t like talking about it too much. I’m very very new to the LGBT community.”
07. Keiynan Lonsdale
Star of The CW series The Flash, Lonsdale took to Instagram to open up about his bisexuality. Speaking frankly, the television star said that he was tired of being insecure and scared about his sexuality. In a heartfelt post on the social media app he wrote “I like to change my hair, I like to take risks with how I dress, I like girls, & I like guys (yes).” Lonsdale’s revelation has seen an outpouring of support from the fellow celebrities and fans alike, all of whom laud him for being brave enough to come out.
06. Alia Shawkat
Part of two major TV series – Transparent and Arrested Development – Alia Shawkat is a household name. In an interview last year with Out Magazine, 28-year-old Shawkat came out in the open about her orientation, stating that she is sexually attracted by both, men and women. Making a powerful statement about how one needs to be bravely vocal about one’s sexuality, Shawkat said “As a woman, an Arab-American, and a member of the LGBTQ community, I have to use whatever voice I have. There’s no more delicacy in being quiet.”
05. Taylor Bennett
Better known as the younger brother of Chance The Rapper, Taylor Bennett holds his own ground as a rap artist. On the eve of his 21st birthday in January last year, Bennett took to his Twitter handle to open up about his bisexuality and offer support to people struggling with their own sexual identities. Speaking from the heart, he wrote “My birthday is tomorrow and moving into next year I’d like to be more open about myself to help others that struggle with the same issues,”
04. Lil Peep
Born Gustav Elijah Ahr, Lil Peep gained a huge fan following worldwide for what was known as emo and lo-fi style of rapping. In August last year he came out of the closet on Twitter stating bluntly ‘yes I’m bisexual’. Lil Peep’s revelation saw him receive a deluge of support from fans as well as online proposals from admirers. Unfortunately, Lil Peep passed away tragically a few months later in November due to an alleged drug overdose.
03. Daniel Newman
The striking television actor came out to People magazine last year by announcing to the world his bisexuality. Speaking up about in support of people around struggling to come out of the closet, Newman provided much needed motivation by saying “I don’t want to be hidden and have to dodge the question. I’m proud of who I am.” Newman applauded the fact that the rules are bending and society has become more accepting than ever of members of the LGBTQ community.
02. Natalie Morales
This dark-haired bombshell hit the headlines last year on announcing that she felt attracted to both, men and women. Best known for a starring role on the ABC series The Middleman, Morales has also appeared on a host of popular television programs including White Collar. Speaking plainly, she was quoted as saying on the Smart Girl’s website “I don’t like labelling myself, or anyone else,” she wrote. “But if it’s easier for you to understand me, what I’m saying is that I’m queer.
01. Kristen Stewart
Okay, so it’s no surprise that Kristen Stewart is gay. Following her successful appearance as Bella Swan in the Twilight series, Stewart has been in the news with a constant string of lovers most of whom have been women. However, it was only early last year that the brunette beauty finally admitted to her bisexual orientation. Addressing her sexual orientation on Saturday Night Live, Kristen Stewart referenced some mean tweets made by the President himself about her and went on to add “Donald, if you didn’t like me then, you’re really probably not gonna like me now coz I’m hosting SNL and I’m like so gay dude.” Way to go girl!
