10. Felicity Jones
It may come as a surprise to most that the Rogue One actress was initially considered for a lead part in the 50 shades movie series. Dark haired and dark eyed, Felicity Jones had all the physical attributes required to play the stunning but shy Anastacia Steele. However, rumour has it that the gorgeous British actress was turned down as producers felt her too old to play the part of 21-year-old college student Steele. Yet, being the absolute professional that she is, Jones went on to prove everyone wrong as she played a college student and the love interest of scientist Stephen Hawking just a year later in the Oscar-winning biopic Theory of Everything.
9. Shailene Woodley
Rumour has it that American actress and activist Shailene Woodley was especially keen to play the lead in the 50 Shades of Grey movie series and was not opposed to doing any of the much talked about nudity scenes. Shailene Woodley is best known for playing the terminally ill Hazel Grace in the 2014 romantic drama The Fault in our Stars. Dark haired with a peachy complexion, Woodley had the perfect looks and charm to sweep the handsome Mr. Grey off his feet. Fate however had other plans. As reports go, the actress’s press schedule for Divergent – a dystopian science fiction thriller – was in conflict with the shoot schedule for the first 50 Shades of Grey movie, thus leaving her no choice but to opt out of the film.
8. Imogen Poots
Poots was named quite early on as a major contender for the part of Anastacia Steele. Best known for her roles in the science fiction horror film 28 Days Later and the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is By My Side, Imogen Poots is a well-known leading lady on-screen as well as in British theatre. Reasons are not known why things did not work out for Ms. Poots as she did not land the starring role in the romantic trilogy. However, all is well as in real life, Imogen and the real Anastacia Steele, Dakota Johnson are actually great friends and have been spotted many times shopping together.
7. Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale was one of the initial actresses keen on landing the part of Anastacia Steele on the big screen. The gorgeous American actress and singer who is best known for playing Aria Montgomery on the thriller series Pretty Little Liars, auditioned for the lead role; however, it did not work out. Hale did go one record to talk about her experience in the audition saying that, “The audition was so uncomfortable. It’s exactly what you thought it would be. A big monologue but very sexual.” Hale did go on to suggest later that she felt the role of Ms. Steel was not for her.
6. Emilia Clarke
Emilia has won our hearts as the fierce and beautiful Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones. However, few know that she was also one of the contenders in the running for the role of Mr. Grey’s lover. While considering the part of Anastacia Steele, Emilia Clarke apparently turned it down due to the highly sexual scenes of BDSM that she would be required to act out on-screen. This notwithstanding, she went on to do some full-frontal nude scenes in Game of Thrones. Would Emilia have hit it off as Ms. Steele? I guess we will never know.
Let’s take a look at the male stars now
5. Charlie Hunnam
The King Arthur star allegedly signed on the dotted line and was cast prior to Jamie Dornan as the handsome tycoon Christian Grey. However, Hunnam had to unfortunately bow out of the movie cast due to reported heavily conflicting work schedules. The handsome British star confessed that he had looked forward to playing a much-coveted starring role in the 50 Shades of Grey movies and also clarified to the media that the sex scenes did not daunt him at all. Well what can we say except that one actor’s loss is another’s gain.
4. Ryan Gosling
If rumours are to be believed, Gosling was the producer’s initial choice to be cast as the suave, BDSM-loving businessman Christian Grey. However, the handsome actor had some reservations about being cast in the role. Ryan reportedly did not connect at all with the character’s feelings and emotions and thus felt highly unsuited to the part. While Gosling’s lady fan clubs would have been definitely disappointed with the actor’s refusal, we all do prefer to see this Canadian heartthrob in his usual sweet roles of a romantic hero.
3. Matt Bomer
Star of the hit TV series White Collar, Matt Bomer seemed like a perfect choice to play the role of Christian Grey. With deep, brooding eyes and a firm jawline, he was sure to set the screen afire and yet, things did not work out for this American actor. Rumour has it that the producers had second thoughts about casting Bomer in the lead role owing to the actor’s real-life homosexuality. They felt it would not make the dark-haired actor look believable in the part. Bomer’s huge fanbase started an online petition to beg the producers to cast the actor; however, the change.org signatures unfortunately went unheeded.
2. Garrett Hedlund
The handsome American actor and model Garrett Hedlund was in the running to be cast as the handsome billionaire Christian Grey. However, Hedlund reportedly turned down the role as he felt the commitment was too great, seeing that it required him to do 3 films. The tall actor best known for his role in the 2012 drama On The Road, did not want to be tied down with a film series and preferred to keep his schedule open. Would Hedlund have charmed us as Mr. Grey in the red room of pain? We’ll probably never know!
1. Robert Pattinson
Rumour has it that our very own Edward Cullen was reported to also have been a frontrunner for the role of Christian Grey. However, the dark-haired actor reportedly turned down the role as he did not want to be a part of yet another film series. Pattinson felt that his fans connected with him as the vampire-with-a-heart Cullen and the bold sexual scenes that 50 Shades of Grey demanded would probably not fit in with his existing fan base. However, Pattinson once cheekily did mention that he once met 50 Shades author E. L. James at a party and did toy around with the idea of being cast in the lead role.
